Sometimes it sems that lawmakers just feel compelled to do something, even when the public welfare is unaffected and no moral strictures are violated:

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Responding to actor Tom Cruise’s purchase of an ultrasound machine to monitor his fiancee’s fetus, California lawmakers voted on Thursday to restrict sales of the machines.

But what about all those blood pressure cuffs, and thermometers in private hands? Won’t they do something?? Think of the children, for goodness sake!
